Not ready for the average user!
STOP! Don’t toss your VMware Fusion, Parallels or Bootcamp options out just yet. While WinOnX 2 Pro is a very valid packaging of Wine, it’s not by any means flawless. In fact, Wine has lots of problems running Windows 32 apps under OS X. Take time to go to the developer’s website and read ALL the disclaimers about what is not supported. Go into the project assuming what you want to run will not run. If it does, then it’s all upside.
Full disclosure is I’m a big fan of WMware Fusion and have been for years. It’s flawless in its execution of most operating systems running under OS X. That being said, it’s also $79.00 for the standard version.
Pros: WinOnX 2 Pro is only $8! What else can you get for $8 these days. All the compiling of the Vine source code and file creation is already done for you. (That alone is worth the $8.) If your new or just curious about VM’s WinOnX 2 Pro might be a good option for you to learn more. WinOnX 2 Pro appears to support some of the basic Windows XP generation software programs quite well. Check the publisher’s website for details on what programs have already been tested.
Cons: Don’t count on an 800 number for support. Also the publisher’s website has little to no documentation to help walk you through problems and challenges you might run across. Programs which require heavy graphics and/or significant I/O support might be better on an alternative VM option. Plus, WinOnX 2 Pro has a ‘nag’ screen which reminds you every time a program starts it’s not a known program. Seeing it once is enough for me. Give me the option to not see it again.
Summary: WinOnX 2 Pro is not ready for prime time. Unless you’re willing to experiment my recommendation is look to another VM option. WinOnX 2 Pro is not stable enough for the average user.
